WELCOMING OCTOBER October is the 10th month of the year. Then, how did it get its name? October comes from the Latin word, octo, meaning eight. October was the 8th month in the early Roman calendar. It later became the 10th month when the ancient Romans moved the beginning of the year from March 1 to January 1. October has had 31 days since the time of the Roman emperor Augustus. The theme for the month of October is "Mystery, Magic and Mayhem". Here are some of the things we have planned for the month: 1st Bible Study at 10:00 a.m. 3rd Catholic Mass at 11:00 a.m. 10th Lunch Outing 17th Hymn Sing at 2:00 p.m. 26th Trick or Treat at 2:00 p.m. 28th Resident Council 31st Halloween RESIDENT NEWS One of our residents, Wallace Mundell, has planted a small vegetable garden on the back of our lot. We are happy to say we have been getting some wonderful vegetables from it already. Wallace started everything by seeds. We hope to have nice fresh home grown corn soon. We have Becky Cain, a resident from the Bethlen cottages, volunteer her time to go to the library to get books for our residents. She is even willing to have a time where she will read to them in a group setting. We are excited to see the response we have had with this and are anxious to see what happens with this in the future. We would like to thank Rev. Posta and Terez Kaszap, a cottage resident, for the work they did in helping us get our outside flower gardens beautiful. They worked long and hard on some of the hottest days we had, and we thank them for all their hard work! It was all greatly appreciated! Nothing is nicer than autumn days with dreamlike haze. Nothing is nicer than golden leaves and yellow sheaves. Nothing is nicer where cornstalks lean than pumpkins hiding in faded green, ready and waiting for Halloween. -Aileen Fisher-WEATHER OR NOT October is a strange month, weatherwise. The first frost usually occurs in October, but days of warm, almost summer-like weather can reappear. Farmers, rushing to harvest the last of their crops, are grateful for these Indian summer days. October, with the beautifully changing foliage, is one of the most colorful months of the year. On the 26th of October we will be having Trick or Treating at the Gardens like we did last year, and we hope to have as good of a®^^ turn out as we did then. More information will be sent to you closer to the day, so keep your calendars free that day so you may enjoy the festivities. Several families and visitors have asked what they can do for the residents of Ligonier Gardens. One suggestion that immediately comes to mind is "Volunteer"! We are always looking for volunteers. Volunteers are always a welcome addition to any facility and are needed to help with projects such as bingo, games and outings. If you would like further information on being a volunteer, please contact our Activity Director, Jennifer Reese at 724-238-3517 Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. We also are working on a few projects: one is to be able to increase the amount of entertainment that is currently being provided to our residents and the other is a fish tank and stand. Since both of these projects are costly to the facility, your monetary donations are always welcome. Our residents would both enjoy and benefit from your generosity. Please make checks payable to Ligonier Gardens. Thank You. ^trtíjbapő "BIRTHDAY GREETINGS" to the following residents who will be celebrating their birthdays in the upcoming months of September and October: SEPTEMBER OCTOBER Jennie Kmetz 1st Pauline Fulton 2nd Sara Campbell 2nd Russell Douglass 8th Evelyn McCormick 7th Muriel Kerr 21st Edna Pritts 8th Paul Cramer 26th Lois Bogle 21st Aline Hoffman 25th Lorna DelSorda 26th
