J^cttÉritçr plígíjltgíjts The following poem is dedicated to our residents of Irish descent. THE ISLE OF EMERALD by Lorice Fiani Mulhern There is an isle of the greenest green... glistening emerald, really; Plains and fields and rolling hills that form the land of Eire. O many a castle you will find, many a fisherman's haven, Upon the inlets and the bays that form the coast of Ireland. This is the isle of Shannon, of Dublin and Killarney; Of rivers and lakes and counties fair, and geniuses like Shaw and O'Casey. O this is the isle of the leprechaun, the shamrock and the Blarney Stone, Where thatched roofed cottages grace of Ireland's charming countryside. Here you'll find a ready wit, a handshake and a smile, For the friendliest people anywhere live on the Emerald Isle. This year during National Nursing Home Week, the Activity Department will be sponsoring "SENIOR GAMES" in honor of this year's Summer Olympics. Residents will be able to participate in several categories such as wheelchair races, ring toss, basketball, long distance throwing, bowling, etc. to name a few. Ribbons will be given to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. The games will begin on Monday, May 20th with the carrying of the torch from the 2nd floor out to the outdoor patio, where they will light the final torch for the beginning of the games. Senior Games will last for several days with other various activities throughout the week based on the Olympic theme. Details will be announced closer to the time. MAY OLDER AMERICAN'S MONTH A Presidential Proclamation from 1963 through 1973 was known as "Senior Citizen Month". In May, 1974, it became Older American's Month. In 1980, May 8th was also made Senior Citizen's Day in which all Senior Citizens were recognized for their contribution to their communities. To honor our Senior Residents here at the home, a wide variety of special programs have been scheduled throughout the month along with National Nursing Home Week. Details will be posted and announced in the in-house newsletter.
