Unity Hill United Church of Christ in Trumbull, Connecticut holds an International Dinner every November. Every year, a different country is highlighted. Having only a few Hungarian members, Vincent Vida, President of Branch 1 and John Tober, Treasurer of the same branch, were asked to hold a Hungarian stuffed cabbage dinner. Along with the main course was served kolbász, mashed potatoes and poppy/nut rolls. The dinner was a complete sell-out! All who attended exclaimed that it was the best dinner yet. The church greatly benefited. We Hungarians who are members of Branch 1, are so proud. Vincent Vida Branch President Branch 35- Detroit, Ml. Branch 35 had a very active life in the past few months. The year started out with a wonderful outing and a pleasant social event on January 31, 2004 sponsored by the church The event is called the “White Rose Ball,” where the proceeds were given out in the form of scholarships. We are very happy that the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America and the Bethlen Home jointly sponsored a table for their guests. Also attending the White Rose Ball as guests of the Federation and the Bethlen Home were Pat and Gary Ambrus, Ilona and Andrew Szabó as well as Rev.Ferenc Varga and his lovely wife Katalin as you see them in the picture above. On February 8, 2004, the Church together with members of Branch 35 also hosted a wonderful “Old Fashioned Disznótoros Dinner.” Once again we had a wonderful fellowship as well as remembering some of the events through songs and poems recited at these affairs. The event that brought members of Branch 151 together on March 14th was the commemoration of Hungarian Independence Day celebration at the McKeesport Hungarian Club. All in attendance were greeted by Mr. Robert Doby, President of the Club. Toastmaster of the event was Mrs. Rose Gerzsenyi, Treasurer. Opening invocation was offered by the Rev. Alexander Jalso, Pastor of the Free Hungarian Reformed Church of Homestead, PA. Following the singing of the American and Hungarian National Anthems, Mayor James Brewster of the city of McKeesport addressed the community. The famous call to arms so closely associated with the 1848 uprising “Nemzeti Dal” by Sándor Petőfi, was recited by Mr. Joseph Fabri, HRFA director from the area. Additional poems were recited by Noemi Borsay and Judit Borsay. It was good to see the two young ladies getting involved in this program who so wonderfully maintained their knowledge of the Hungarian language. A special part of the program was presented by the “Friendly Singers” comprised of those who came to the United States following the freedom fight of 1956 and who join together year after year to entertain the assembly. The Hungarian address was offered by the Rev. Dr. Daniel Borsay, pastor of the Hungarian Reformed Church of McKeesport. Coffee was served along with different varieties of Hungarian cookies and pastries. The display was certainly a showcase of what a Hungarian bakery can offer. Truly the celebration was a wonderful time of fellowship. The McKeesport Hungarian Club desires to extend a word of thanks to the Hungarian Reformed Federation for their continued help of the club throughout the years.
