FRATERNITY Page 9 FOUNDING FATHERS continued Bandré was one of the founders of our society in Connecticut; he was instrumental in organizing the Rakocy Egylet in Connecticut; he was a faithful worker of Branch 68 of the Verhovay Segedegylet, and a Business Agent of the Kálvin Janos Egylet for decades. He was a chartered member of the State Street Reformed Church in Bridgeport, Connecticut, where he served as chief elder for many years. Whilst serving as chartered member of the Hungarian Reformed Church in New York City, he met Nyitray, who recommended that the 1897-Convention elect him as Comptroller of the HRFA. He served in that position until his retirement. Bandré was bom in 1870 in Magyar-Bod, Abauj County. He immigrated to America in 1890 as a young tailor. Because of his profession, he had the opportunity to become a successful businessman. However, instead of following this course, he decided to devote his spare time to the well-being of the young ethnic Hungarian community. At the 1898-Convention in Bridgeport, Connecticut, he met his future wife, Katalin Nemeth, who came from Göncz, a village in Abauj County. From this marriage were bom six children, who later became active members of the Hungarian community. On the 50th anniversary of the Federation, Bandré was honored with a golden medal for his outstanding services to the Federation. Although only a craftsman, it was in America that he reached the pinnacle of his talents, namely to advance the needs of the early immgrants.
