FRATERNITY Page 9 CAMPAIGN KEEP the PINE TREES of the BETHLEN HOME ALIVE We are starting a campaign to replace our aged pine trees on the two sides of the entrance to the Bethlen Home. Blessed is the memory of those noble people who planted them 60-70 years ago. The old trees still wear their proud crown, but are losing their needles. They are beginning to look bare, sick, and one by one they need to be cut down. These pine trees watched generations come and go, and we would like to keep the appearance of the beautiful, impressive entrance to our Home for generations to come. In the Bethlen Home, a donation fund has been set up for the replacement of the old trees. Each new tree costs $50, without calculating the labor of planting and removing the old tree roots. I have received letters giving advice, and I have also called an expert to make sure that we will be doing the right thing. At the 1993-Fall Meetings held at the Bethlen Home, we were honored by guests, visitors, representatives of the HRFA and the William Penn Association, ministers, and presbyters, in whose presence our first four trees were dedicated to Rev. Dr. Eva Fabian, the late Mrs. Elizabeth Kecskemethy, the late Mrs. Margaret Mircse and the late Mr. Byron Bishop. What nicer thing is there to be remembered by than a “life tree”? Now I place this project into your hands and in your hearts. Let us pick up the ideas of our forefathers and let us continue walking on the old road lined with majestic pine trees, so that our children may inherit the same beauty we inherited from the generations before us. Örömmel közöljük Tóth János András sikerét, akinek édesapja Egyesületünk igazgatósági tagja volt. így különösen is megérdemli az elismerő cikkünket. Nagyapja Nagyarban volt igazgató kántor-tanitó, aki Sárospatakon végzett. Édesapja Turistvándiban tanított, ahol Móricz Zsigmond töltött gyermekkorában néhány évet. Tóth János András Hamilton, Canadában született 1965-ben, ahol édesapja a Kálvin János Református Egyház orgonistája. A kisfiú már gyermekkorában tagja a Turul cserkészcsapatnak, a kanadai magyar cserkész jamboreen aranyérmet nyert szavalásból, három évvel később pedig a Fillmore-i kiképző táborban magyarságismereti oklevelet szerzett földrajzból és néprajzból. Középiskolai tanulmányait a St. Thomas Moore Collegiate-ben végezte, majd “summa cum laude” nyert diplomát matematikából a Mc. Master Egyetemen, másfél év múlva ugyanott megkapta a Mester fokozatot. Ezután a híres Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) hallgatója lett, ahol 1992- ben matematikai doktorátust szerzett. Ilyen kimagasló eredmények után érte a megtiszteltetés, hogy a világhírű Harvard Egyetem 1993. január 1-től aszisztens professzornak hívta meg három évre. A legmelegebb jókívánságainkat fejezzük ki a magyar tudósnak, s hisszük, hogy a jövőben is a magyarság hírnevét fogja öregbíteni. Külön gratulálunk a szüleinek is, akik ilyen értékes fiút neveltek.
