PRESIDENT’S CORNER

By the time you receive this magazine, the II World Conference of the Hungarian Reformed Churches in Hungary held in June of this year will have ended. Under the auspices of this World Conference, people of Hungarian origin coming from many parts of the world were able to attend meetings in different parts of the country. The Federation was represented by President Imre Bertalan; Vice President & Mrs. George Dózsa; Branch Manager Mrs. Endre Csornán (Arlene) and her daughter Kati Csornán. In the next issue of our quarterly, we hope to bring an update of the events.

Tremendous changes have taken place since the I World Conference in Hungary in 1938 when the majority of participants from America were 1st and 2nd generation immigrants who still had very strong ties to the "Old Country." Now in 1991, Budapest and the entire nation looked forward to welcoming a newer generation of American Hungarians—a generation that may no longer be as fluent in its mother tongue and as tradition-bound as its forefathers, yet a generation which is anxious and desirous to trace its ancestry and acquaint itself with the country of its origin. We hope that this World Conference was able to achieve this goal.

If there is any one among you who participated in the Meetings that were held this year, I urge you to send photos and any documentation that you would like to share with us.

Here in the United States, we will be celebrating Independence Day and we take this opportunity to salute our brave young men and women who participated in Desert Storm. I am sure that now again sons and daughters of American Hungarians volunteered to defend the ideals for which this great and beautiful country has always stood: equality and freedom for all.

In our Hungarian Reformed community in the United States, Independence Day marked the opening of the Bethlen Home. It was on the 4th of July in the year 1921 that the Home was opened in the presence

of 80 white-robed orphans. On the 4th of July in the year 1896, the Hungarian Reformed Church constituted its first classis which was to become the prototype of the one Hungarian Reformed Church in the United States. And last but not least, on that same day and year, 1896, our beloved Hungarian Reformed Federation was established.

To all the members and friends of the HRFA, I wish a very pleasant summer.

AZ ELNÖK ROVATA

Amikor ezt a folyóiratot kézhez kapják, már az ez év júniusában megtartott Magyar Reformátusok II. Világtalálkozója véget ér. Ennek a Világtalálkozónak az égisze alatt a világ minden tájáról érkezett magyar származású embereknek módjukban állt részt venni az ország különböző részein tartott összejöveteleken. Az Egyesületet Bertalan Imre elnök, Dózsa György alelnök és felesége, Csornán Endréné, Arlene osztálykezelő és leánya, Kati képviselik. Folyóiratunk következő számában reméljük, hogy részletes tájékoztatást tudunk adni az ünnepség eseményeiről. Rendkívül nagy változások történtek az 1938-ban megtartott első Magyarországi Világkonferencia óta, amikor az Amerikából érkező résztvevők első vagy másodgenerációs emigránsok voltak, akiknek még erős kötelékeik voltak az Óhazához. Most, 1991-ben, Budapest és az egész ország készül arra, hogy fogadja az újabb amerikai magyarokat. Azt a generációt, amely már nem beszéli folyékonyan a magyar nyelvet, és nem annyira őrzi a tradícióit, mint az elődei tették, mégis amely óhajtja és kívánja nyomon követni őseit és megismerkedni azzal az országgal, amely az ő hazájuk volt. Hisszük, hogy ez a Világtalálkozó képes lesz ezt a célt elérni.

Ha valaki az olvasók közül részt vett a Magyarországon tartott ünnepségeken ez évben, kérem, hogy közölje velünk tapasztalatait és küldjön fényképeket vagy egyéb dokumentumokat, amelyeket szeretne velünk megosztani.

Itt Amerikában mi a Függetlenség Napját fogjuk ünnepelni, s ezt az alkalmat használjuk arra, hogy tisztelegjünk a mi bátor fiataljaink előtt, akik a Sivatagi Háborúban részt vettek. Bizonyos vagyok abban, hogy most ismét amerikai magyarok fiai és leányai is jelentkeztek, hogy megvédjék azokat az eszményeket, amelyekért ez a gyönyörű állam mindig harcolt: egyenlőség és szabadság mindenkinek.
