In New Guinea he was put as a cook (that was his trade) in charge of the headquarters of General MacArthur and staff. He cooked for the General and his staff till he got out in 1945. Once he cooked stuffed cabbage and the General like it so much that he tried making it at least twice a month. While he was in New Guinea, Bob Hope, Jack Benny, Jerry Colona were there. We have lots of pictures taken of the General and his famous corn cob pipe. Steve also saw the General's wife (she was much younger than him) and his son. She is still alive and lives at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. His son lives in Greenwich Village in New York City. From New Guinea they went to the Philippines and then returned home. Meeting of Branch 269 was held on February 3,1991 at 11:00 a.m. at the John Calvin Magyar Ref. Church, Perth Amboy, NJ. The presiding officer, Rev. Francis Vitéz called the meeting to order and also gave the opening prayer. At the meeting it was urged that members visit the sick and the shut-in and also support the affairs of the local congregation. The following officers were elected for 1991: Rev. Evans, Treasurer; Carol A. Moore, Secretary. Helen ]. Savage, Branch Manager BRANCH 300—WASHINGTON, D.C. Not too long ago I received a letter from one of my dear members Mrs. Rose Levayi. Since its contents are so interesting and amusing, I asked her if we could share it with our readers. She had no objections whatsoever for which we are very grateful: . read your nice article about Australia. Steve (my husband) was thru there but not in an enjoyable way. He was in the 1st draft at the age of 28, and he was ready to get out when Pearl Harbor broke out. So they put all soldiers from Fort Hamilton on train and sent them to San Francisco. There they were put on troop transport ships. It took them about 20 days to get to Australia to a place called Addelenn (or so, after so many years you don't remember the names of places). There they were put on ships to New Guinea. So that Regards to Dr. Hamos and the Reverend. As always, I remain, Rose Levayi."
