On Sunday, December 6, 1981, the Connecticut branches of the H.R.F.A. celebrated the 85th Anniversary of the Federation with a dinner held at the Bessemer Center in Bridgeport, CT. Over 50 members of Branch 52 joined to help make this celebration a truly happy occasion. (A write-up of this dinner may be found elsewhere in this issue.) Many future activities are in the planning stages for 1982. A dinner party at the Darien Dinner Theater is planned for Sunday, March 7, 1982 for Branch members. A possible bus trip to Ligonier, PA, in the spring is also being considered. Branch Officers for 1982 are: PRESIDENT: Ernest Virgulák VICE-PRESIDENT: Joseph Lucskay RECORDING SECRETARY: William Sontra CORRESPONDING SECRETARY: Suzanne S. Virgulák TREASURER: Joseph Singola COMPTROLLER: Andrew Hutkai S.S.V. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH In June of 1981, Connecticut Branches #52, 365, and 247 were transferred from Mrs. Irene Kurimai to Suzanne and Ernest Virgulák of Norwalk, Connecticut. This transfer resulted after the untimely passing of Andrew Kurimai, long-time branch manager for the H.R.F.A. and a former member of its Board of Directors. Suzanne Virgulák, daughter of William Sontra (former President of Branch 52 in South Norwalk, CT, and niece of the late Alexander Csik (a former field force member of the H.R.F.A.) is a graduate of the Fones School of Dental Hygiene of the University of Bridgeport. She worked as a school dental hygienist for the Norwalk Board of Education for 17 years, but this position was terminated in April of 1981 due to cuts in the school system budget. In addition to her Federation responsibilities, presently she is employed as a part-time secretary in the Internal Audit Department at Singer World Headquarters in Stamford, CT. Ernest Virgulák, newly-elected President of Branch 52, is a self-employed fuel oil dealer in the Norwalk area. He has just completed serving a two-year term as Vice- President of the consistory of the Hungarian Reformed Church in South Norwalk. He had served as Treasurer for 3 years, was chairperson of the Stewardship & Finance Committee for 2 years, and has been a long-standing member of the Auditing Committee. In the past, he served as chairperson of the Christian Education Committee. Suzanne has served on the consistory for several years, being a member of the same committees as her husband; she also taught Grades 1 and 2 in the Sunday School for 8 years. In 1983, she will complete a six year term as a Calvin Synod representative to the United Church Board for Homeland Ministries. BRANCH 67 - SHARON, PA Vice-President William Szuch and his wife Helen have informed us about their godson Eugene “Butch” Hunyadi III a senior standout wide receiver at the University of Toledo, Ohio. Butch was an outstanding performer during the past four seasons and contributed strongly to the rebuilding of the Toledo football program. During his career'as a Rocket receiver, Butch made 70 catches for 1,143 yards, 10 touchdowns and a 20 yard average per career reception. He was named to the Toledo Rocket Club for his outstanding performance. This young man also had the critical responsibility of holding the ball for all extra point and field goal attempts. One attempt which will always be replayed in his mind will be the 41 yard winning field goal on nation-wide television in the California Bowl which gave Toledo a last second victory. Butch has been contacted by National Football League Teams and is looking forward to an extended football career. His major is law enforcement and he currently works part time as a security officer at a Toledo department store. We are proud to say that Butch has been a life-long member of Branch 67 and that his father and grandparents are active members. BRANCH 197 - SPRINGDALE, PA Mr. and Mrs. John Balia recently celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary with an open house at their home in New Kensington, Pa. After the celebration they took a vacation to Sunny Florida. Mr. Balia is a member of Branch 197 Springdale, Penna., of the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America. He is also the national vice president of the William Penn Association. We extend to them our hearty congratulations and well wishes. F. C. Szuch 8
