12 FRATERNITY working dog, he is a good hunter and can be a fine retriever. He is an active dog and even though he can adapt himself to city life, he is much better suited for the farm or open suburb where he can get plenty of exercise. SUMMER SAFETY WITH THE POWER MOWER A power mower can be a dangerous machine unless it is handled with care and good judgment. Here are some rules for its safe operation: Clear the lawn of stones, wire and other debris before using; don’t work on the mower unless the motor is stopped; be sure that small children and pets are well out of your way when mowing; don’t use an electric mower when the grass is wet; don’t smoke while fueling a gasoline mower; learn to disengage the clutch quickly, and turn off the motor before leaving it unattended. Safety first will help you to enjoy the summer months. WEDDING BELLS The wedding ring is worn on the fourth finger of the left hand because the ancients believed that an artery ran directly from this finger to the heart. Thus “it was the most proper way to bear this pledge of love.” For the same reason, physicians used to mix their medicines with this finger, as a safeguard to their patients, for it was believed that any poison touching even the extreme tip of the finger would at once affect the heart. By the way, if you’re buying anything gold, you should be familiar with these terms: 24 carats is pure gold. The symbol 14K means that 14/24 of the article is pure gold, the rest is an alloy; gold-filled (often called rolled gold plate) means that the content is some other metal covered with a thin sheet of gold; gold-plated means that the content is a metal that has been dipped in gold and thus you get the least amount of gold in this type of article. I assumed . . . I’ve always done it that way . . . I’m so busy I can’t get around to it . . . I didn’t know you were in a hurry for it . . . I’m waiting for an 0. K. . . . I didn’t know that this was different . . I’ll wait till the boss comes back . . . I didn’t think it was important . . .
