10 FRATERNITY Our summer sessions have helped our children, furthermore, to make adjustments to new situations as they were thrown among children of their own kind and age, though of different backgrounds. Géza, who prefers to answer to the name of “Gizzard”, age 7, had never been away from home till this summer. His father enrolled him in the summer school.. All was well till bedtime, when Gizzard suddenly realized that the only tie that linked him to his home, his father, was gone. With tears held back bravely he sauntered over to my wife and nudged her gently, saying: “Hey, Miss, if you see a strange man walking around here looking for me, it’s my father. When you see him, tell him two weeks of this will be enough.” With this he turned and proceeded, dejected ani heart-broken, to get ready for bed with his roommates. The next morning at breakfast my wife asked him what she might write to his father. He quickly answered: “Tell him to make it three weeks.” “Gizzard” has become a well adjusted, happy, independent little individual, who likes his “different” summer school, and is benefiting from it spiritually, academically and physically. He has already made valuable contributions in his classes. “Gizzard” has become a distinct personality among the rest of the children. The hero of our true story, along with the forty-four other children at the Bethlen Home, will become better American citizens for having broadened their knowledge, their contacts, their experiences and visions. With this brief glance at our summer work, it can be noted with pride that our Hungarian Reformed Federation of America offers not only good insurance benefits to its four-generation membership, but also, through its charitable institution, the only one of its kind in America, makes a substantial religious and cultural contribution to our youth. May God grant that our Federation and Bethlen Home, jointly, continue to serve our people in the real spirit of fraternalism for countless years to come. People of our faith and race, young and old alike, you can make this possible!
