of an expected parousia the apostle was simply repeating an old divine command found on the first pages of the Bible (Genesis 2:15).

In summing up his counsel for troubled times the apostle points to a twofold gain from such a quiet, own-business-minding and industrious attitude as recommended by him. First, he says that it commands respect and brings honor and trust from outsiders. ’’That ye may walk honesty toward them that are without”.. . ’’That ye may have the respect of the outsiders”. . . ’’That your life may be correct in the eyes of the outside world.” . . . Meddling, busy-bodying is always compromising, respect rending, hate and scorn engendering, whereas a quiet living focused at one’s own business is always respect commanding and confidence creating.

The Bible places a considerable stress upon the necessity of assuring a favorable impression upon those among whom the Christians live. Not as if the opinion of the non-Christians would be the standard for the Christians themselves, but because Christianity has something to sell to the nations—Itself. Its salesmen and saleswomen must be its own confessors. Through their personal life they must present and represent it so that it would create a favorable impression and become sought for. Any person or any nation that professes to hold something good for the whole world is under obligation to present and represent it in a manner assuring a favorable reception. And not even the best things, not even Christianity, can hope for a favorable impression upon the outside world if presented or represented in an offensive, discriminating or provocative manner.

Secondly, according to the Apostle a kind of life recommended by him holds the promise of unfettered, self-supporting, truly independent life. ’’Not dependent upon anybody”. . . ’’That ye may have lack of nothing”. . . Apostle Paul always prided himself upon his independence bought with the work of his own hands as a tentmaker. If anyone, he knew the value of independence and he certainly went out of the way to secure it for himself. And he proves himself a great psychologist also. In times of trouble and insecurity men lose their courage: the virtue of selfreliance melts away and men are apt to rely upon semebody or something else thought more powerful than themselves. And a quiet man quietly alone with his God and quietly going about his business and working with his own hands is certainly something gloriously outstanding in tumultuous times. It is such giants, such independent personalities and not little fretful runners and jumpers around whom the Apostle pictures as capable to stand on their own and command respect and be of service to the

rest of mankind in a topsy-turvy world. True Christianity never inspired to beget midgets, but always strived to produce giants. Their very strength is in their ability to live quietly in an unquiet world.--------—

Miután csak még most néztem át az októberi havi jelentést, mert ha mindjárt nem is tehettem, mikor megkaptam, de el nem mulaszthatom végig olvasni a sok gond, bajok mellett is, mert épen van idő — egy hónapig, mig a másik megjön — átolvasni. Aki azt akarja, meg is teszi és úgy tud belőle Ítélni. De akik csak a Dividendet lesik, várják, azok azt hiszem a tartalmát nem olvassák át, mert akkor nem követelnének dividendet attól az egyesülettől, amelynek árvaháza, aggmenháza, saját gyü- lés-háza van. — még ha dividendet adhatna is; aki okosan gondolkodik, tovább lát az orránál, vissza adja azt ezekre a célokra.

Mi öregek azon vagyunk, hogy házat vegyünk gyermekeinknek, a jövendőbelieknek és azt megtarthassuk tisztességesen. Dicső neve legyen. Ne osztogassuk ki di- videntül, még ha jutna is, akkor is vissza kell azt helyezni más nemes célra. Van máma annyi hely, hová kellene. Szerencsétlen elhagyott szülőföldünk, Magyarho. minkért. Vagy nagyon sokan már arra nem emlékeznek, hogy honnét származtak, az amerikai fényes nyomorúság elfelejttette velük. Ugyan velem soha. Most is lelki szemem előtt látom a hullámzó Balatont, pedig 35 éve elhagytam. A mai sok gond, baj eltakarja lelki szemeink előtt olykor, de feledni nem lehet az olyannak, kinek szerettei még ott vannak, vagy pihennek lent a sírban.

Minthogy a divident végett vettem a kezembe a tollat, ide írom, hogy épen most vasárnap, 10-én volt a

személyesen láttam, csak hallottam a családom elbeszéléséből, kik ott részt vet.tek a kiosztásnál, ők mondják, hogy mennyien már tanácskoztak, mekkora hordó sört vegyenek azon, amit kaptak és pedig nagyon sok volt köztük, kik még kamatot sem fizetnek már évek óta a kölcsönükre, de mivel hátralékban nincs, megkapta a di- videntet, és mennyit segített az saját magán? Azt hiszem, akik a Református Egyesülettől várják a dividentet, azok is egy jót innának rajta, több semmi nem lenne, ahelyett, hogy egy szegény árvának adnák. Sajnos, nagyon sokan vannak ilyenek. De már ezekről nem Írok.

Még annyit jegyzek ide a Pinta Sándor Kisbojtár elbeszéléséről, hogy nagyon kedves, szép volt, kár, hogy nem folytatódott, mert még vártuk családommal együtt. Unokáim angolul olvasták és magyarázatot kértek a gólya és túzok madárról. Ezek nem láttak élő gólyát, csak a fani papíron. Minthogy folytatása nincs, majd kezdjük elölről újra, mert meg van az összes könyv gyűjtve. — Még ide jegyzem, mink megelégszünk a kedves nyári magyar iskolákra adott dividenttel is. 10 unokám kezében van a kis könyvecske, 6 éves kis anyátlan unokám, kit magam nevelek, minden reggel elmondja “Jó Istenem felébredtem," estve meg “Én Istenem becsukódik már a szemem.” Még ha én nem kezdeném is, ö maga kezdi el, minden estve a budapesti rádióval zengi: “Isten áldd meg a magyart," nem is akar addig aludni menni. Igen ám, az Édes Anyáknak volna elsőbb kötelességük, hogy gyermekeik, amennyire lehet, megmaradjanak reformátusoknak is, magyarnak ás. De sok nemtörődömség is van; mig gyenge, nem hajtja s ha vén már, nem hajlik.
