140. évfolyam (2003) Supplementum 1. 37 Pharmacological therapy of vascular diseases of the retina Berta A. University of Debrecen, Faculty of General Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology From the extensive field indicated in the title the author will discuss in detail two subjects: first, the pharmacological therapy of acute retinal vascular occlusions (thrombosis, embolia); and secondly, the anecortave acetate therapy that has been proposed for the conservative treatment of exudative AMD. Several professional recommendations, statements and therapeutic guidelines have been worked out in Hungary in connection with the uniform treatment of thromboembolic diseases; but these have not yet included specific ophthalmic aspects. The time has now come for ophthalmologists, after discussion with other disciplines, to formulate and agree a common protocol for the pharmacological treatment of various forms of thrombosis and embolia occuring in retinal blood vessels. From this year, two Hungarian university Departments of Ophthalmology have joined an international study of anecortave acetate retrobulbar injections for the treatment of subfoveolar CNV. This clinical trial is a multi-centre, placebo controlled, double-blind study. Preliminary data suggest that this method is a very promising new therapy that may well become part of clinical practice as a new possibility for the treatment of exudative AMD. 29 August 2003 - Retina Section 1 - Invited lectures
