Polarisatiós optikai módszerekkel már a maródást követő első órákban ki lehetett mutatni a fénymikroszkópos vizsgálattal épnek látszó keratocyták sérülésének jeleit. A mészmaródást követő napon, a maródott stróma rétegek közelében épen maradt keratocyták anisotrópiájának növekedése, a sejtek aktivitásának fokozódására utalt. A regeneratio során megjelenő fibroblastok felszaporodásának gyorsasága a maródott stróma rétegekben, fordított arányosságot mutatott a károsodott keratocyták számával, illetve a stróma sérülés mélyre terjedésének mértékével.
