A BUDAI ÉS PESTI VÁSÁROK A KÖZÉPKORTÓL A 19. SZÁZADIG modern and modern periods, partly on the basis of surviving sources and, in the case of the medieval period, their reconstruction. It demonstrates that at the end of the Middle Ages, Buda and Pest coordinated their weekly markets: Buda held these on Wednesdays and Saturdays, while Pest held its own on Tuesdays and Fridays. The annual fairs of the two cities were also coordinated, with each city holding two annual fairs. After the two cities’ liberation from Ottoman rule (1686), the days of the weekly fairs remained the same as in the medieval period, while both cities received privileges from the king to hold four annual fairs. Of the annual fairs, the Pest fairs seem to have been more important. After the unification of Budapest (1873), the annual fairs continued to be held on the dates established at the end of the 17th century, adopting the Pest fair system, until the mid-20th century. 894
