TRIANON ÉS A NEMZETEK SZÖVETSÉGÉNEK EGYESSÉGOKMÁNYA 778 TRIANON AND THE COVENANT OF THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS by Tibor Frank SUMMARY The Senate of the United States Congress refused to ratify the Peace Treaty of Trianon between Hungary and the United States as it contained the Covenant of the League of Nations as its Part I. (All the Paris Peace Treaties included it.) Without the ratification being completed, the United States could not accept and sign the Treaty in its original form. Though President Woodrow Wilson made every effort to convince the U.S. Congress and the people of his nation about the utter importance of the League of Nations, his own brainchild, the refusal blocked the entry of the U.S. into this organization, the post-World War I forerunner of today’s United Nations Organisation. By the same token, the Peace Treaty of Trianon was never accepted by the U.S. and a new treaty had to be compiled without any reference to the League of Nations and its Covenant. The National Archives of Hungary possess a copy of the new Treaty which is introduced here in some detail including the first and last page of the original document. The signatures of U.S. President Warren G. Harding and of Secretary of State Charles E. Hughes appear on the last page.
