MOSONY LIPÓT – TÖRTÉNETI KUTATÁS ÉS MAGYAR KULTÚRPOLITIKA KONSTANTINÁPOLYBAN 350 LIPÓT MOSONY – HISTORICAL RESEARCH AND HUNGARIAN CULTURAL POLICY IN CONSTANTINOPLE, 1914–1916 by György Csorba – Gábor Fodor SUMMARY Lipót Mosony (Dangelmayer) was delegated to Constantinople as the successor to Imre Karácson by leading members of the Hungarian cultural policy sphere. The present study seeks to answer the question who Mosony was, and how his scientific-cultural activity can be assessed. The authors examine Mosony’s life, and analyse his work with a focus on the period he spent in Turkey and his efforts to explore Hungarian-related Turkish sources, and deal in detail with the public role that he played in supporting the expansive eastern policies of the Hungarian Catholic Church and government. Also extensively covered are his articles and reports about the First World War "Armenian massacre", among which the secret report he despatched to Archbishop János Csernoch is published in extenso. A bibliography of his works, and the summary report that he wrote for prime minister István Tisza about his activities in Constantinople are published here for the first time. Although his Constantinople years were not free of all contradictions, the paper offers a comprehensive account of the priest's life in 1914–1916, thus providing insight into a less well-known period at the crossroads of Hungarian archival research abroad, Ottoman studies, and Hungarian cultural and ecclesiastical policy.
