SUMMARY

The name of Ervin Pamlényi was closely attached to that of Századok for two decades. Starting his career as a disciple of Gyula Szekfű, after World War II he became a convinced supporter of the new order. While shaping it himself in his own way, he feared and suffered from it as well. His idea was to improve things by small steps. Yet the debate about the merit of small steps, especially as compared to a single major transformation, has been swept away by history for quite some time. In this paper, the author addresses for the very first time, and in possession of the entire surviving source material, the question of why Ervin Pamlényi collaborated with the Secret Services from 1965 on.
