VITÁK EGY POZÍCIÓ KÖRÜL 1160 DISPUTES AROUND A POSITION Nadler Herbert’s appointment as director of Budapest Zoo by Zoltán Mautner SUMMARY The Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden is Hungary’s most popular cultural institute, yet many facets of its 150-year history remain unexplored. As an example, very little is known about how the directors of the Zoo received their honourable positions, and who decided on the qualifications required of the candidates. The appointment of Nadler Herbert, who led the institute for 19 years, gives us an insight into the organisational structure of the Zoo, and shows its position within the capital city’s administrative structure during the time of Horthy’s regency. The carefully elected director was not only a good leader, but also a great choice for representing Hungarian zoological culture to foreign audiences.
