THE „KREUGER EMPIRE” IN HUNGARY The Swedish Match-Production Monopoly in Hungary by Pásztory Levente (Summary) On 16 May 1928 Walter Ahlström and János Bud, on behalf of the Svenska Tändsticks Aktieholaget and the Hungarian government respectively, signed an agreement whereby, in return for a loan of 36 million dollars, the Swedish company was accorded an exclusive monopoly of match production and distribution for fifty years in Hungary. By this act, Hungarian match became part of the „empire” of Ivar Kreuger, known in the period as the „king of match”, an empire which in the 1930s already spread over fifteen countries in Europe and South America. In the agreements concluded with the individual countries economic considerations predominated. The reason for the STAB’s undertaking to grant the loan to Hungary with exceptionally favourable conditions — and an amount which was the largest in proportion to the overall population among the similar agreements concluded by the Kreuger companies —, was that it calculated with an annual income in the region between 675 thousand and 1,1 million dollars.
