Eventually, in the course of its twenty three years of existence, the Hungarian match monopoly only yielded the expected profits in the first few years, and the ensuing events, such as the Great Depression, Kreuger’s death and the collapse of his „empire”, the Second World War and the consequent political upheaval in Hungary, coupled with nationalisation, faced the Swedish enterprise with important challenges.
