1340 FÜLÖP TAMÁS A FORGOTTEN „ALISPÁN’ - THE CAREER OF ALBERT KÜRY by Tamás Fülöp Summary In the last third of the 19th century Hungary made considerable progress towards the building of a modern civil state administration. Thanks to the expansion of research into the history of administration and local archontology that has been made in the county archives over the last fifteen years, we now have an ever more comprehensive view of the operation of county administration in the early 20th century. Based on this research, it appears in the administrative structure of post- 1867 Hungary a number of high-ranking officials were active wo, alongside their expertise and professional vocation, were also called to become esteemed members of their local communities by their sense of responsibility, humanity, and moral conviction reflected by practical actions. In the present paper, I have undertaken the analysis of such, by no means untypical, career, while callig attention to the necessity of further comparative research.
