292 KISS GERGELY they had become subjected immediately to the archbishop of Esztergom instead of the local bishop (with the exception of Pannonhalma and Székesfehérvár). The position of the royal chapels was different: although their legal status had developed along similar lines until the early 13th century, many among them, around Buda and elsewhere on the territory of the bishopric of Veszprém, lost their privileged status for several decades, whereas the chapels and parish churches at Buda only acquired a similarly privileged position at the end of the 13th century. Further changes only occured with regard to the status of chapels which were removed from the authority of the archbishop of Esztergom in the middle of the 13th century, resulting in new protracted litigation between the bishop of Veszprém on the one hand, and the chapels and parish churches concerned and the archbishop of Esztergom on the other.
