1326 POGÁNY ÁGNES important aim of the Central Bank in Berlin and of the Wilhelmstrasse was to pressure Hungary into coordinating her foreign exchange policy with the other Southeast-European countries, adopting a common course for the Reichsmark, thereby facilitating the emergence of a multilateral clearing centered in Berlin. The German plans were only gradually realised by September 1941. Then the Mark's dissuasion . against the convertible currencies was abolished, and Budapest joined the European central clearing in Berlin. During the war the Hungarian government grew ever more impotent in the face of German demands, and consequently provided unilaterally several resources for the financing of Germany's war efforts. From 19 March 1944, when Hungary was occupied by German troops, there existed no independent Hungarian financial policy, and the collaboration government put all the human, material and financial resources at the Nazis' disposal.
