116 loan Drágán ennobled, just like the nobles of Hateg and Maramureş, were ennobled either individually or as families. The ‘cnezi’ as free landowners, and the Romanian social elite connected with them, ceased to exist in the middle of the 15,h century. Their place was taken by the Romanian nobles who derived from the ‘cnezi’ and they coexisted for a century. They had to carry the burden of their origin for a long time; they were a “foreign form” as Nicolae Iorga used to call them. Their evolution was complete assimilation with the nobility of the Kingdom. Starting with the reign of Mathias Corvinus, the Romanian elite, suppressed from its natural development, took two main forms: Romanian nobles and the servant- ‘cneziwith the corresponding alternative forms.
