Celsitudini vestrae fideles servitores Joan[nes] l[itte]ratus reqfuisitor] Alb[ensis] The Village of Barzaus at the End of the 16'h Century (Abstract) The author of this article attempts to reconstruct the society of a depopulated village, based on a conscription from 1588. The author of this conscription was Balásfi János, 'requisitor' (letter searcher), at the ‘loca credibilia' of Gyulafehérvár (Alba lulia). The document containes all the parcels from the village, together with their owners and the name of inhabitants. The possession named “Barzaus ” belonged to the castle of Zsidó vár, in the district of Karánsebes. The first charter in which this possession appears is dated in 1444, and the last one is from 1834. The article includes a short history of the possession and the evolution of the population from here, based on the conscription of 1588, published in the anex of this article. Parts in this village were possessed - among others - by the Mona. Ill, and Cherbicha noble families. The total number of the population was around 200, and ethnically - if on one sessio (= one house) lived five inhabitants — mainly was Romanian.
