Grapes, wine, besides the role of healthy drink, was an important element in the system of taxes. Nobles would easily turn it into money by selling it in pubs, but peasants and serfs would sell it indirectly. There were several “vine centers” in Ugocea. First, we mention Vinogradov, on the Black Mountain, the hill that rises above the town. Until the second half of the 20th century, there were endless vineyards and rich cellars. But all these have become victims of the anti-alcohol policy of the Soviet Union. These dispositions have slowed down the wine production. Plantations were cut and many cellars were destroyed. Another important center is on the slopes near Halmeu. Locals say these hills continue the chain from the region of Tokay (this means their wine is as good as the wines og Tokay). The wine was not as famous as the one of Vinogradov, but the production here hasn’t been so radically affected.
