ily, thus Căpleni village had a similar fate. But in 1399, the Károlyi family managed to redeem all the territory of the village from the relatives and became the single owner of the domain. The family gained great prestige later, but at this time, up to the end of the Middle Ages, it was a middle class family, with a modest fortune. They were permanently confronted with the danger of poverty, therefore the fate of Căpleni village always depended on the prosperity, and especially on the economic crisis of the owners. The Károlyi family have pledged parts of the village several times in order to get cash, during the 15th century. In 1468, they even pledged the entire village, which was recovered five years later. Károlyi family was concerned to preserve their ownership on the entire village, probably due to the existence of a monastery founded by the Kaplony kindred in Căpleni, and patronized by their descendants, the Károlyi family. Despite of this fact, Căpleni village had a decreasing evolution during the 15th century. The Károlyi family manifested a growing interest for Carei, whose importance increased gradually, to the detriment of Căpleni, especially after the fortress was built in the market-town. The weakening role of the village is emphasized by its location at the border line of three domains, owned by the Károlyi, the Domahidy and the Báthori families.
