ATTENTION TO THE LITERARY WORK OF ZSIGMOND

MÓRICZ

Hungarian Calvinist spirituality has four cardinal aspects that, by means of literary mediation, have influenced Hungarian thinking. The article traces these four characteristics in the literary work of Hungarian writer Zsigmond Móricz (1879 — 1942): i) awareness of one’s mother tongue (Hungarian) as an essential element of one’s national and denominational identity, a unique phenomenon in Europe; ii) strong Biblicism in the sense of the Bible’s impact on content, language, morality and attitude; iii) prophetic, critical voice rooted in the Old Testament; iv) steadfast loyalty to church schools.
