Preface to the second edition

The generally favourable reception accorded to the first edition of this dictionary confirmed my belief in the usefulness of the approach chosen. The multilingual comparison of authentic terms and passages in order to show a common specific meaning of lexically often different expressions proved to be a success. This approach was not only commended in a number of statements on the topic but was also followed by others (see, for example, the four-language glossary issued by W1PO in 1979). The comparative tables showing the competent authorities of the various countries, unusual as they may be in dictionaries, also met with approval and such tables were later on used by others in a novel patent dictionary. There was no reason to deviate either in method or in form from the practice of the first edition or to make substantial changes in the manuscript when the need for a new edition arose.

It was, however, necessary to add to the word stock terms appearing in recently concluded international agreements and to replace some national terms formerly in use by ones used in recent national legislation. I have tried to correct mistakes and errors as far as possible and thanks are due to all those correspondents who took the trouble to draw my attention to such shortcomings. Some suggestions for the inclusion of further terms in the dictionary could to my great regret not be complied with since a considerable increase in its size would have made the dictionary too cumbersome to use.
