A régi városháza, épült az 1830-as évek végén In: Polgár története. Szerk. Bencsik János. Polgár, 1974. JÁNOS BENE: Polgár in 1848-1849 The study follows the events that took place in the life of a special provincial town, Polgár during the Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence of 1848-49. It was in a peculiar situation as besides the difficicult issues of the bourgeouis progress several other difficult or even unsolvable questions emerged as early as the first months. The population of Polgár reclaimed the lands they possessed earlier and demanded the restoration of the privileges they enjoyed as a 'Hajdú town'. Moreover, during the recruitment of the Hungarian Army the town declared that it belonged to the 'Hajdú District' instead of belonging to Szabolcs County. All the problems described above led to the fact that apart from their own problems (the attacks of the Viennese court, the defence of the homeland) the new government had to regulate the provincial town, which insisted on the old 'fundamental rights'. However, realising how serious the danger was, in Polgár extra recruitment tax was gathered at the time of the recruitment of the Hungarian Defense Forces and inhabitants of Polgár serving in Bocskai troops (in two battalions and a regiment) fought bravely in the battles of the War of Independence. In the appendix among others a list of soldiers coming from Polgár can be found.
