Lóránt Ödön Horváth Szombathely and the Premonstrants The relationship between Szombathely and the premonstrants began in 1802, when Ferenc I. reestablished the order and charged the provostship in Csorna to have grammar schools built (in Szombathely, Keszthely) and in them the members of the order were to teach. The premonstrants began to teach in Szombathely from the beginning of 1808. Many of the Premonstratensian teachers were scientists and took part in the public life and development of the town. Adolf Kune the later provost of Csorna was a mathematician, a physicist, an astronomer and a historian, at the same time the member of the public body of the town, and a Member of Parliement. He was the one who wrote the history of Szombathely-Savaria, he had the building of the high school of the present day built. An outstanding teacher was Kelemen Kárpáti who continued writing the history of the town and founded the cultural society of County Vas. He enriched the material of the museum with his archeological and etnographical results of his research. Vilmos Lipp also uncovered roman and avar remains of Savaria and Pannonia, meanwhile established the Archeological Association of the town. Sebő Edelmann played a great role in establishing the water-power plant in Ikervár. The following scientists continued the physicist teachers’ activity: Szaniszló Molnár, Miklós Steiner and Jenő Simonffy who was the provost when the order was suppressed. Fidél Kövér wrote the geography of Hanság, Alfonz Iharos became famous for his research in natural history and biology. The Premonstratensian order gave such teachers to the town of Szombathely, who formed the intellectual aspect of the town by educating the young and taking part in the life of society. Ferenc Aba SHI The life and work of Dr. Adolf Kune (The opening lecture of the Adolf Kune Commemorational Exhibition) Former director of the Premonstratensian grammar school and the famous natural scientist of county Vas was born 18th December 1841 in Hegyhátsál. He attended his high schools in Keszthely and Szombathely. He already had praiseworthy result in natural science at the high school. He became the member of the Premonstratensian order in 1857. He graduated as a teacher and taught at 154
