The up-to-date equipping of the physical laboratory of the institute in Szombathely, the vulgarization of demonstrative experiments, giving lectures and the publications of essays are due to him. Practical results of his activity was establishing modern telephone connecti­ons at that time. Together with Jend Gothard - the astronomer - they became outstanding propagators of natural sciences. The exhibition opened exhibits objective relics of this rich activity. József Horváth Adolf Kune and his pupil Jenéi Gothard Jenő Gothard was a prominent representative of the Hungarian scientific and technical progress in the last two decades ot fhe 19th century. On the influence of Adolf Kune already as a student Jenó' Gothard has chosen the research work as his aim in life. The lecturer and the old pupil together demonstrated the large-scale experi­ment with the Foucault’s pendulum in 1880. Later on with his researches in the field of astrophysics Jend Gothard has inscribed his name both in the national and in the universal history of astronomy, too. György Tóth History of the Gothard Observatory at Szombathely from its foundation to date This lecture is reviewing the hystory of the Astrophysical Obervatory at He­­rény to date established by the Gothard brothers in 1881. This paper is also revea­ling data which have been unknown so far. The period over a half century from 1909 through 1959 with the series of events thereof is less known to us. The story is illustrated by numerouos photos unpublished hitherto. László Jáki Survey about the educational policy of the 1890’s The lecture gives typical examples about the educational policy of the 1890’s. It evaluates the results of the 20-year-long public-education programme and the 10-year-long plan for the secondary education, emphasizing the comple­xity and geneorosity of this policy. According to the author, the knowledge of the past is a fairly crucial factor to the real progress. 155
