II. A magyarországi sörfőzés története

A neves hadiszállító család, élén az ötvenes éveit taposó, ambiciózus Hirschfeld Lipóttal, 1850-ben települt Pécsre azzal a nem titkolt szándékkal, hogy megvásárolja és gyárrá fejleszti a kitűnő adottságokkal rendelkező ispotályos sörfőzdét, és felveszi a harcot a konkurenciával: Pucher lózseffel, aki 1848-ban ugyancsak a sörgyártás jogát nyerte el. Pucher másodjára csak sörárusításra kapott engedélyt. Hirschfeld ebben megnyugodva 1851- ben megnyitotta sörgyárát a régi ispotályos dűlőben a Rókus-dombon. Pucher már nem számított ellenfélnek, már csak azért sem, mert 1853. február 4-én meghalt. Ekkor a városi Sörház utcai sörfőzdében az üzletszabadalmi jogot Scholtz Gyula nyerte el. The grain trader from the village of Bonyhád did a lot for developing the beer industry in the county of Baranya, where Pécs is located. He developed and nurtured business ties with the brewery, the mills and the merchants of the city and the county to ensure a steady supply of grains. The renowned military contractor family, headed by the ambitious Lipót Hirschfeld who was in his fifties at the time, settled in Pécs in 1850 with the professed intention of acquiring the hospital brewery and to upgrade it into an industrial beer production plant. The brewery was seen as offering excellent conditions for such a development, and Hirschfeld wanted to use it to compete with his main rival, József Pucher, who also won the license to produce beer in 1848.
