position in world competition for the Hungarian artist. It is his inventive gift. Whether it be a poster - the strong point of Hungarian advertising artists - a prospectus, a packing or a book jacket, the hand of the Hungarian artist is recognizable in the effective colour scheme at the first glance. In recent years Hungarian posters have been reanimated by the change from the new practicality to the picturesque. The new practicality was the school of accuracy, while picturesqueness is that of the expressive element. The striving for novelty is unlimited in painting. The transfer of novel achievements in painting to advertising art has been facilitated by the parallel progress of the technique of reproduction. When speaking of more recent Hungarian advertising art we must not omit to say a word in praise of the Hungarian manifolding establishments. The artists to whom the Hungarian poster owes its predominant position are Berény-Botnyik, Georg, Irsai, Konecsni, Mallász-Dallos, Paul. C. Molnár und Richter jr. Besides them a host of young artists are at work, many of whom will doubtless find the field-marshal's baton of success in their paintboxes. (...) (Trans/. By W.L. Campbell. Gerbrauchsgraphik, August 1936.) Advertising Labyrinth on the trams (...) well composed tram posters always provide successful and valuable advertising. But it has to be said that there are far too many advertisements on the Budapest trams! There are small posters above the windows, posters on the doors, posters on the glass at the front, illuminated poster boxes, disks on the straps, posters hanging on chains, inscriptions on the side, billboards outside on the sides, billboards on the roof, neon lighting at night and a mass of advertising slogans in the day with the driver and the conductor being the only ones with no inscription. It really is too much of a good thing! (Reklámélet, November 1936)
