Fig. 1 Metal threads of different morphology As for their materials, solid metal strips or wires were made of gold, silver or gilt silver, gilt copper, copper plated with silver or with silver and gold or of brass-plated copper. In case of strips cut of metal coated organic materi­als, the organic support was leather, parchment, animal gut (membrane) or paper. For the plating or coating, gold leaves or gold powder, silver leaves, or gold and silver (in double layer) was used. Based on these data, I tried to put together the chronology of the metal thread preparation. I have entered the most frequently occuring starting and finishing data on the graph.
