Walter Endrei: A printed silk fragment of the 17th century

had serious merits fighting against the Hungarian revolt of Imre Thököly destined to be governor of the country next year. It is probable, that the sheet had been commissioned by the defender or graduate and dedicated to his patronizer, Count (later Duke) Paul Esterházy. The former measures of the sheet can be estimated at approximately 90 x 60 cm. The first dimension can be deduced from the rays of sunshine the radius of which is ab. 50-60 cm, emitted by a sun similar to a theses sheet of 1665 publisched by Rózsa 8 , there must have been at least 30 cm left for the credentials and the thesises. The width is assumed by the fact, that in the 17th century silkfabrics rarely exceeded this measure. We may therefore also suppose, that the figure of Athene had not been in the axis of symmetrv and above seems to have been an allegorical representation or portrayal . Rózsa 1. cit. Illustration 8. The aim. of this publication was not the appreciation of the fragment as objet d'art, but to draw attention to the possibility of inferring to its historical background. On this occasion I wish to express my thanks to Gy. Rózsa, G. Borsa and G. Galavics for their valuable informations.
