The Budapest production of Catsplay was in 1971 at the Pesti Színház (Theatre of Pest). It was directed by the young director Gábor Székely, who was also responsible for the success of the earlier Szolnok world première. Mária Sulyok played one of the leading roles in the Budapest production; as a consequence of the play's success, a friendship between author and actress developed. The letters document this relationship. Mária Sulyok (1908—1987) was one of the most outstanding and versatile figures of contemporary Hungarian theatre. She played brilliantly in a wide range of roles extending from tragic sublimity to grotesque humour. Her mother-tongue having been German, she could play her role in Catsplay in German too.
