ELŐSZÓ

In this edition we try to follow the peculiarities of the original manuscripts: new paragraphs, punctuation marks, special accents, emphatical underlinings. This is especially important concerning letters of Mr. Craig: they are very much part of his personal style, conveying the "acoustical" image of his sentences. During the first year of their correspondence, Sándor Hevesi has used German. The reader will find the translations into English in Appendix A. Later, Hevesi chose to write in English. We have not changed or corrected his faults, marking only some places where the meaning was not clear enough. The text of each letter is given first in its original language, followed by Notes, then its Hungarian translation and Notes, containing the most important dates: form, provenance, the inventory numbers etc. - All but one of Craig's letters are in the collection of the Hungarian Theatre Institute. Those of Hevesi have no individual identification numbers given by the library of the Arsenal; their numeration was given, too, by the Hungarian Theatre Institute. There are Appendices at the end of the volume: the English and Hungarian version of Hevesi's letters written originally in German, and his articles for The Mask. There are two kinds of parentheses used in this edition. The regular ones: ( ) are those used by the correspondent; the square brackets 11 were used by the Editor. The dots between the brackets [...] refer to unreadable places. We have no hints whatever that these two artists have met each other personally. There is no trace of a Hungarian exhibition of Craig's designs; but five pieces, - two costume-designs for the first act of Acis and Galathea, two etchings and a draft for a backdrop were published in the "theatre-issue" of the periodical Magyar Iparművészet, in No. 1., 1914. * 12 *
