A LEVELEK

A LEVELEK/THE CORRESPONDENCE 1. E. G. CRAIG TO S. HEVESI / E. G. CRAIG HEVESI SÁNDORHOZ [Firenze] 1908. II. 5. [Stamp on the cover / Bélyegző a borítékon] Please listen to a stranger - wellknow [!] to you. Fülep, your countryman, tells me you are a wonderful theatre artist. 1 - And, that as I am a wonderful theatre artist as well, you will not mind if I write to you. Fülep, then is responsible if there is a fight. And now, seriously - I send you news of a journal which is due to appear quite soon. 2 Will you tell us of all that is most alive in the art, in Hungary. We will print what you send. I believe you are always very busy - then you are one of the few men who really will have time at your disposal - is it not so? Cordial and sincere greetings E Gordon Craig NOTES: On the heading of the first page there is a pen-and-ink drawing: two theatrical figures and a giant mask (1.0'), crowned with the words: The Mask. 1. Fülep, Lajos (1885-1970), Hungarian art historian, aesthetician, residing in Florence from 1907 to 1913. 2. Vol. One, No 1. of The Mask was published in March 1908. Craig was very busy organizing international personalities of the theatre around this new periodical. Already in the first number he mentions LOUIS FULIP [!] and ALEXANDER HEVESI among the "writers and artists contributing to the journal". 3. Népszínház-Vígopera. Opened in 1875, it was a theatre dedicated to folk-drama with music, and, later, to operetta. From 1. Oct. 1907, its profile was enriched by light operas, and, thanks to Hevesi, with important dramas as well. Kérem hallgasson meg egy idegent - akit jól ismer. Fülep, a maga honfitársa azt mondja, hogy maga egy csodálatos színházművész. * 13 *
