A CSÍKI SZÉKELY MÚZEUM ÉVKÖNYVE 2004 147-160 MUCKENHAUPT ERZSÉBET NÉGY ANTON KOBERGER-MAKULATÚRA Abstract: [Four mackies by Anton Koberger] During the restoration of the books, fragments of manuscripts, documents and printings are to be be found on the covers, having an inestimable value for the history of culture. Identifying them, the book historian, in case he does not dispose of other references, can ascertain the date and place of binding the books and sometimes he can even identify the bookbinding workshop. The present study introduces us in the secrets of the most productive german printer and greatest publisher of the 15* century, Anton Koberger with the help of the "treasures" found in a few volumes of the Szekler Musem's old books' collection. Anton Koberger owned a printing house, a storehouse and a bookshop in Nürnberg. As a bookseller and businessman, probably hoping in a higher income, he was concerned with binding not only his own publications but also the works of other printing houses and publishers from Europe. These volumes, known in the specific literature as Koberger's printing house's publications were carried out either being ordered or paid by the famous printer, publisher and bookseller in his own workshop. In the Ciuc Szekler Museum's old books' collection nine volumes of Koberger's printing house are kept. During the restoration, four Koberger mackle pages were taken out from three volumes printed by him (inv. 6177, 6578, 6647) and from some incunabulum published in Basel and Strasbourg (inv. 6214. 6217). These tipographical rejects are the indisputable proof of Koberger's volumes' existance and help the research worker in dating the volumes as exactly as possible. The incunabulum and the volumes which make the object of this study originate in the franciscan monastery's library from Çumuleu-Ciuc and entered the Ciuc Szekler Museum's collection after revealing the fund of books in 1985.
