Introduction
Introduction The symposium „MAORT established 70 years ago" - shortly MAORT conference - is the subsequent evaluation and closing of an era. The period of MAORT (Hungarian-American Oil Industries Limited Company) - on the area of today's Hungary - is the beginning and development of the large-scale industrial oil and gas production for ten years. On the basis of activity of ]M\ORT and his legal predecessor EUROGASCO (European Gas and Electric Company) the most modern technology and engineering arrived to the country that supposed the naturalization of a progressive work-culture, approach. The American leaders soon taught the Hungarian employees, geologists, geophysicists, engineers, workers. The direct consequence of all these was the high income and improvement of circumstances of life of the concerned workers and their family. During the 5+10=15 years (1933-1948) the two firms laid the foundations of a new, modern industry and achieved good results. The MAORT spirit, mentality lived further after the nationalization. The politics after the 2nd World War affected against the early positive spirit of work but it needed the economical and production results. The interesting - and perhaps not accidental - continuation of the story that after a half century the mother-company of MAORT, the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey - though under other circumstances - is active again in Hungary. I wish that this fact should bring further good cooperation and production results without any war or other conflicts. All the nine lectures of the conference are about the MAORT or some part of it. Philip ). Mulhall spoke on the European activity of the Standard Oil Company - its legal successor is the ExxonMobil. László Paczuk made known for the audience the oil and gas production methods of the MAORT and its legal predecessor. Lajos Srágli discussed the not always unclouded connection between the Hungarian state and MAORT. János Tóth showed the housing estates and houses of MAORT orally and in pictures. Zsuzsa Kovács showed the changes brought the oil era in the settlements of Zala in the everyday life of the villages. Valentin Cseh reported on the air raids of the Allies against the MAORT plants in 1944. Dr. Tibor Laklia as a former worker of MAORT remembered on the events six-seven decades ago. Dr. Tamás Magvarics analyzed the question of the nationalization of IMPORT and the United States of America. Attila Holoda lectured on the legal successor of MAORT, on the MOL Pic, the most significant integrated oil company of Central Europe. This lecture is not in the volume.
