Edit SZENTESI TO THE PRE-HISTORY OF MONUMENT PROTECTION IN HUNGARY IV. The journes of Joseph Scheiger in Hungaary and his practical advices to builders of castle reconstructions The author summerizes the activity of Joseph Scheiger in his first Vienna period (1817-1835) with a special insight to his catalogue of the Technological Museum in Schönfeld, in the possession of which a significant part of Emperor Rudolf Il.nd's chamber of art and rarities was to be found. The catalogue, and its subject however has been totally forgotten. Another important activity of Scheiger was Lower Austria's re-discovery from topographical point of view, shown not only in his serveral travel-reports and topographical publications, but in a publication of the drawings of the Archive of Swiss castles. In the meantime he travelled twice to Hungary, in the year 1823 through Bratislava (Pressburg, Pozsony), and Komárom to Buda and Pest, and in 1824 to Eisenstadt, where the Esterházy family had a castle, and Pottendorf, Forchenstein, Lockenhaus. On both of his journeys he made a report published in Josef Hormayr's „Archiv für Geschichte, Statistik, Literatur und Kunst". In the same magazin did he publish in 1824 a text with the title „On the Reconstruction of Old Monuments", which was the first and totally forgotten document of systematic monument protection in the Austrian Empire. These practical advices are mainly for the owners of historic castles wanting to renew their possessions, stressing the importance of the documentation and the preservation of the buildings of our predecessors, the propagation of historizing completions. At the same time it gave a lot of really practical ideas how to preserve these buildings in general, writing on such matters as drainage, removing stains from the stones etc.
