both sides of the chancel. Examples of similar monastic churches can be found in Piran, Zadar (Zára), Pula and Dubrovnik. In Pula, the chancel is somewhat wider than the nave, thus resembling a transept. Such aisleless arrangements are very typical of the provincial churches in the Mediterranean. b. Aisleless church with a choir added to its sanctuary. Similar examples include the Franciscan Church of Porec, the St. Dominican's Church in Trau (Trogir) and the St. Francis' Church of Siben. Unlike Northern Croatia, where monasteries were preserved only in Sarengrad (Atya) and in Remetinec (Remetinc) - and even these were preserved only partially -, the monasteries of Dalmatia and Istria survived in far greater numbers and in better conditions. Here the churches and the monasteries were built of ashlar. The Fraciscan Church of Pula is an outstanding example of its kind, even by European standards. In this region, too, the application of plastic art in architecture is rather rare. The work of stone carvers employed at town buildings can primarily be observed at the construction of cloisters. This is illustrated by the cloister of the Franciscan Church and Monastery of Dubrovnik, which was built by the local master Mihoje Brajkov during the first half of the 14th century. Illustrations 1.
