A Nagyenyeden 1819. november 23-án kiadott liatárátlépési engedélyén az van feltüntetve, hogy „szabadságot nyert az ott inulatásra: nyolcz hetet" (Térjék József: „Kmlékek Körösi Csoma Sándorról". Based on research in archives and libraries, authoi intends to clarify in detail the precedents and motivations for Alexander Csoma de Körös' stay in Egypt in 182C and the circumstances of his further travel. From own findings, he provides interesting new contributions 1c lhe personality of Francesco Antonio Champion, Austri­an vice-consul and cheese merchant of Italian origin, lie throws light on the relationship between the vice­consul and the wanderer, with special regard to the mystery of the visa necessary for Csoma's further travel. Mention is made of the tirolian smith, Josef Schäffcr, who helped Csoma with lodging in Alexandria. Interest­ing qucslions arise in connection with Csoma's purpose in Egypt and his Arabic studies. On the basis of contemporary English and French travels by Thomas II. Legh.Jean Paleme, Edouard de Monlule, Robert Thomas Wilson, Isabel Burton, René de Chateaubriand and Robert Walpole as well as by Bernardino Droveiii, a comprehensive picture is supplied of the public situation in Alexendria of the early 19th century, stricken by plague. These conditions did not allow that a foreign scholar could study the sources in Egyptian libraries. Translated by D. Loczy
