Even in his childhood he was susceptible to oriental languages and culture. He studied in Budapest and Dresden, completed university in Vienna, Leipzig and Tübingen and was granted a scholarship to England. In 1887 he became a teacher in the Oriental College of Lahore, India. He began his scientific activities by the excavation of archaeological and cultural historical of Kashmir. In 1900 he led several major expeditions to Inner Asia, where he explored the once flourishing oasis towns along the famous Silk Route. His excavations in the territory of the present Iran, Iraq and Pakistan were also significant. At the age of 80, he died in Kabul when he started exploration in Afghanistan and is buried there. His activities are summarized in voluminous monographs and for the public he wrote numerous travel-books. Along with the description of geographical phenomena and processes, his intention was to analyze the interactions between the geographical environment and historical events.
