ÖRÖMTELI GYARAPODÁS A magyar geográfia történetében és Érd város kulturális életének fejlődésében fontos eseményt hozott az 1983-as esztendő. Lelkes kezdeményezők sokévi önkéntes munkája nyomán március hónapban hivatalosan is megalakult a Magyar Földrajzi Gyűjtemény. Benne otthonra leltek a magyar földrajztudomány muzeális értékei, míg a kulturális intézményekben szűkölködő fiatal város egy országos jelentőségű múzeum birtokába jutott. Még ugyanezen év októberében megnyílt a múzeum állandó kiállítása, mely a neves magyar utazók és földrajzi felfedezők emlékeit mutatja be. A kiállítást az elmúlt három évben tízezrek látogatták, és iskolák százai hozták el diákjaikat a hazafias nevelést is elősegítő látványos bemutató megtekintésére. Az épület ódon falai közt megindult a tudományos kutatómunka is. A múzeum létrejötte a Magyar Földrajzi Társaság és Érd város tanácsa gyümölcsöző együttműködésének eredménye. A két szerv vezetői 1984 márciusában ünnepélyes nyilatkozatot szentesítettek, melyben vállalták, hogy mindent megtesznek a múzeum továbbfejlesztéséért. Ennek kézzelfogható eredménye 1986 decemberében született meg, amikor a Gyűjtemény használatba vehette az épület múzeumi célra átépített másik szárnyát is. Az örömteli gyarapodás lehetőséget adott az eddig ismeretlen Cholnoky-festmények bemutatására, a továbbiakban pedig az állandó kiállítás kibővítésére. Távlati tervekben szerepel, hogy a múzeum parkjában híres magyar földrajztudósok és felfedezők mellszobrait helyezik el. PedaKuuH A WELCOME ENRICHMENT The year 1983 brought an important event in the history of Hungarian geography and in the cultural life of Érd. Following the many-year work of enthusiastic initiators, in March the Hungarian Geographical Museum officially opened. It houses the relics of Hungarian geography and the young town, poor in cultural institutions, received a museum of national significance. In October of the same year the standing exhibition opened and it contains material concerning famous Hungarian travellers and geographical explorers. During the last three years ten thousands of people visited the exhibition, hundreds of schools brought their children to see the impressive collection, also promoting the education of patriotism. Within the ancient walls of the building research work also began. The organization of the museum springs from the cooperation of the Hungarian Geographical Society and the Town Council of Érd. The leaders of the two organizations issued a declaration in March, 1984, in which they undertook all tasks concerning the further development of the museum. A concrete achievement was reached in December 1986, when the Museum took over the other, newly restored, wing of the building too. This welcome enrichment allowed the demonstration of Prof. Cholnoky paintings so far unknown and the expansion of the standing exhibition.
