E-mail: Havas.Enikő(5.mkk.szie.hu 3 Sumava NP and PLA Administration, Susická 399, CZ-341 92 Kasperské Hory, Czech Republic, E-mail: lib.dvorakÇàseznam. cz Abstract: A checklist of 20 Vespinae and Polistinae species from Hungary is presented, with a short historical background and comments on their distribution, based on material deposited at the Hungarian Natural History Museum (Budapest), Bakony Museum (Zirc), Janus Pannonius Museum (Pécs), Mátra Museum (Gyöngyös) and Rippl-Rónai Museum (Kaposvár), and partly the private col­lection of Zsolt Józan. Key words: Hymenoptera, Vespinae, Polistinae, checklist, distribution, Hungary Introduction The first paper on the Hungarian Vespinae and Polistinae subfamilies was published in 1876, it is about the nest architecture and biology of the species. Later, in 1877, Mocsáry, than in 1894 by Dalla Torre has published the first faunistic data about these groups. Later MOCSÁRY gave a checklist of the Vespidae family in Hungary in the Fauna Regni Hungáriáé (1897). This work summarizes the data of the so called historical Hungary, so some of these data are already not valid. He mentioned 10 species and 2 varieties in Vespinae subfamily. In beginning of the next century, VÁNGEL (1905) and SZILÁDY (1914) gave some data, but these are not detailed. Later, in about 1938 László Móczár began his very detailed work on Vespoidea, and published several valuable data from Hungary among else in Rovartani Lapok.
