RÉPÁSI VIKTÓRIA – HAVAS ENIKŐ – DVOŘÁK LIBOR: Annotated checklist and distribution of social wasps (Hymenoptera, Vespidae: Vespinae, Polistinae) in Hungary

Polistinae species from Hungary in a zoogeographical division, based on climatic regions, which covered the whole Carpatian-basin. Later (1953- present), more surveys had been done especially in National Parks. The latest bigger summarizing work was done by Móczár in 1995 who mentioned 21 species and subspecies from Hungary. Since that time Zsolt Józan (1992- present) has published detailed information from certain regions of the country. Recent changes in taxonomic opinions and new results from faunistic research as well as the need to investigate some earlier doubtful records make it necessary to compile a new checklist of Hungarian Vespiade fauna. Unfortunately, there are some species which have still rather controversial place in taxonomy. To facilitate comparison with recent taxonomic papers (CARPENTER, 1982, VAN der VECHT & CARPENTER, 1990) the nomenclature follows the DVORAK & ROBERT'S (2006) key in case of the two subfamilies. The morphologically or taxonomically doubtful species are the following: P. dominulus and P. gallicus. In the former hungarian (and also in international) literature, mainly before the early 1980's P. dominulus didn't existed because of a mistake. Nearly all dominulus specimen from Hungary were determined as, P. gallicus, and all gallicus were determined as P. omissus or P. foederatus. After the work of DAY (1979) the position of this species begin to become clearer. Based on this work, Saussure (in 1855) and Smith (in 1857) studied the specimen from the collection of Linnaeus, - labelled as gallica, they accept it as the today gallicus. However it was really a male of P. foederatus, which has today the name P. dominulus, and it is not the same as P. gallicus (DAY, 1979). Later Kohl (in 1898) did also a mistake and describe a P. gallicus specimen as foederata. So after this point the specimens determined as foederata after Kohl, should be taken as gallicus, and the former gallicus specimen as dominulus (DAY 1979, MÓCZÁR 1995, CARPENTER 1996, PEKKARINEN & GUSTAFSSON 1999). P. biglumis and P. bischoffi, besides P. nimpha and P associus are morphologically very similar species (in females only), and are not easy to determine them correctly. During the interpretation of the literature data on these species needed to be careful. Material and methods The present paper is based partly on the evaluation of previously published faunistic records and also on new or newly collected data. We tried to summarize the material of the most important collections in Hungary, but of course still should be some more records in other Museums and private collections. The studied material belongs to the Hungarian Natural Historic Museum (Budapest), Mátra Museum (Gyöngyös), Bakony Museum (Zirc), Rippl-Rónai Museum (Kaposvár), Janus Pannonnius Museum (Pécs) and partly the personal collection of Zsolt Józan. The material was determined mainly by M. & L. Móczár, Zs. Józan, E. Bajári, some parts by G. Soika, M.E. Archer, J. Gusenleitner, A. Cetkovic, L. Dvorak, J. Papp, E. Zilahi-Kiss, L. Méhely, and V Répási. All faunistic data are introduced in figures on UTM-maps (ArcWiev GIS 3.2), but only the newly appeared, or the not published ones are detailed in the text. In the case of taxonomic or nomenclatural changes the name originally used in the referred publication is given in parentheses.
