Summary Recent investigations in different parts of the world contributed much to our knowledge of the taxonomy of the Pottiaceae family (Bryophyta: Musci) and within the family of the genus Barbula s. I. These results indicated the necessity of a revision of the Hungarian representatives of Barbula, a genus especially important in our xeric vegetation. The Herbarium of the Hungarian Natural History Museum (BP) provided the base for this revision done by the author. It appeared clear already by the first check, that the genus is not properly known in Hungary, since about third of the specimens are misidentified. The whole revision of Barbula s. I. in BP resulted in several new morphological and taxonomical observations and ihe proper limitation of the geographical range of its species in Hungary. Morphological and taxonomical results Based on the above revision a new identification key was created for the unambiguous determination of the related genera, sections, species and intraspecific taxa. After the general characterization of Barbula s. I. the different genera (Pseudocrossidium, Barbula s. str., Didymodon), as well as the genera sections and species, are morphologically delimited in details based on the literature's data and actual investigations. More interesting new observations: — The short channels and open fields on the ventral costa surface of Didymodon vinealis can be interpreted by the local absence of the otherwise densely present papillae.
