Mészáros Vince idézett munkájában From Telegraph Office to Professorship — Life of Lajos Martin Lajos Martin was an outstanding personality having a varied and romantic course of life during the scientific and technical revolution in the second half of the 19th century, in Hungary. He published his scientific discourses and inventions when he was the director of the Kolozsvár Telegraph Office. He was called to arms in the War of Independence of 184849 when he was graduating from Europe’^ first university level engineers’training institute, the Institutum Geometrico-Hydrotechnicu. After the failure of the War of Independence, he was enlisted to the Austrian army. Later, his outstanding talent for mathematics was recognized and he was commanded to the last grade of the Vienna Genie Academie.Two years later, he became lieutenant and professor of the Academy. At that time, he began to deal with the idea of aviation. In the meanwhile, he was discharged — because he wanted to publish Iris study on the principle of rotary (rotating) revolving rocket only in Hungarian. In Pest, he tried to work as a private engineer, then became the supervisor of the Pest Telegraph Office, later the director of the Debrecen, then the Kolozsvár Telegraph Office. 70
